PU faculty member participates in ECO meeting


LAHORE: (Saturday, December 7, 2024): Punjab University Institute of Urdu Language and Literature Prof Dr Zahid Munir Amir, who is currently serving as the head of the Chair of Urdu and Pakistan Studies at the University of Tehran, attended the annual meeting of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO). The meeting was held at the Institute of Political and International Studies of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tehran, in which diplomats from all over the world participated. The agreement came into existence in 1992 with the accession of Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan along with the former RCD member countries Pakistan, Iran and Turkiye. Its foundation day is celebrated every year in the month of November to commemorate the establishment of this agreement. The aim of this organization is to promote trade, investment, transport, and telecommunications among the member countries. The meeting focuses on projects in the fields of energy, minerals, environment, agriculture, industry, tourism, human resources and sustainable development. Addressing the founding day ceremony, ECO Secretary General Dr. Asad Majeed drew attention to the objectives that ECO is striving to achieve. Dr Zahid Munir Amir attended the meeting at the invitation of ECO Secretary General. Dr Asad Majeed welcomed him to the event. Dr Zahid Munir Amir was accompanied by International Coordinator of Innovation, Development and Entrepreneurship (IDEA) and Italian Ambassador to Tehran Messina Bertolo, Australian Deputy Ambassador Dr Christopher Watkins, First Secretary for Political and Media Affairs at the Embassy of the Czech Republic Adam Varzal, and Representative of the Asia and Pacific Disaster Information Management (APDIM), a United Nations agency established to combat natural disasters, Russano met with Nicaraguan Ambassador Ramon Moncada de Colenders and Serbian Consul Dian Perisic and discussed the possibilities of educational cooperation and collaboration with them.
